MLB Trade Rumors: Jurickson Profar Deal Discussed by Padres, Rangers

Kyle NewportDec 14, 2018

The San Diego Padres and Texas Rangers have had trade talks regarding infielder Jurickson Profar, according to The Athletic's Dennis Lin.

Discussions have reportedly not advanced far enough to the point where a trade is imminent, though. Per Lin, chances of a deal being made appear "faint," as other clubs have been more aggressive in pursuit of Profar.

The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal recently reported the Padres are looking for a utility infielder to handle shortstop until top prospect Fernando Tatis Jr. is ready. Targets include Marwin Gonzalez, Daniel Descalso, Nick Ahmed and Profar.

San Diego general manager A.J. Preller was a member of the Rangers organization when the club signed Profar as an international free agent in 2009. But the former top prospect has struggled to make much of an impact with his bat, hitting .240 in 352 appearances for Texas.

He did show signs of life this past season, though, hitting .254/.335/.458 with 20 home runs, 35 doubles, six triples and 77 RBI in 146 games.

It marked his first season as a full-time starter.

After debuting in 2012, he played 85 games in 2013. However, he would not make another appearance in the big leagues until 2016, as he missed the entire 2014 and 2015 seasons because of a shoulder injury.

Profar's versatility makes him intriguing, and he has played all around the infield and has even played some outfield. While shortstop is his go-to, his future appears to be at a different position in Texas as long as two-time All-Star Elvis Andrus is around.

Profar is under club control through the 2020 season.
