Russell Wilson Rumors: QB Expects Seahawks to Use Franchise Tag in 2020

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson reportedly expects to receive the franchise tag when his contract ends in 2020, according to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio.

If the Seahawks decide to go that route, Wilson is set to make $30.34 million from his 2020 salary.

Florio added that there has been no movement in long-term contract negotiations.

The 29-year-old Wilson is coming off a highly productive season that saw him throw for 3,983 yards, an NFL-leading 34 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also rushed for 586 yards and three scores.

Wilson was responsible for all but one of the offensive touchdowns Seattle scored in 2017.

A four-time Pro Bowler, Wilson has a career record of 65-30-1 as a starter and has led the Seahawks to the playoffs in five of his six NFL seasons.

Although Seattle fell short of reaching the postseason with a 9-7 record last year, Wilson's play was the least of head coach Pete Carroll's worries.

Per Spotrac, Wilson will make over $23.7 million in 2018 and over $25.2 million in 2019 before being eligible for free agency.

If Seattle franchises Wilson in both 2020 and 2021, he will make $36.41 million in 2021. The Seahawks could tag him again in 2022, but he would make $52.43 million that season.

The Washington Redskins faced a similar situation with quarterback Kirk Cousins, and after franchising him twice, they allowed him to enter free agency and sign with the Minnesota Vikings this offseason.

Whether Wilson eventually signs a long-term deal with the Seahawks or another team, he could be in line for a record-setting contract considering his production and resume, which includes two Super Bowl appearances and one Super Bowl win.
