Buy or Sell 2026 NBA Offseason Trade Rumors

Grant HughesJun 21, 2026

With the 2026 NBA Draft just around the corner and free agency following close behind, the rumors are flying.

Trade chatter is picking up steam, leaks are plentiful and posturing is reaching a fever pitch. That makes this a perfect time to analyze the latest reports with an eye toward separating fact from fiction.

Giannis Antetokounnmpo remains at the forefront of the rumor mill, and we've got plenty of intel to parse on his next destination. After that, we've got some intriguing potential swaps involving the Charlotte Hornets, Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics to consider.

Let's render some buy-or-sell verdicts on all the latest trade noise.

The Celtics are Threats to Land Giannis

1 of 4
Boston Celtics v Milwaukee Bucks

The Athletic's Sam Amick and Eric Nehm reported that the Boston Celtics are "worth watching" in the Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes due to the two-time MVP's "intrigue" with the team and his worries about how a trade to the Miami Heat might result in a stripped-down supporting cast.

The Stein Line's Jake Fischer noted in a Bleacher Report stream on June 9 that the Heat are concerned about Boston as a threat.

Every shred of this reporting checks out.

Unless Antetokounmpo is enamored with the weather, it's hard to make a case for Miami over Boston. Giannis is right to worry about the relative strength of the Heat's roster; most hypothetical return packages include some combination of Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel'el Ware, Pelle Larsson and Kasparas Jakucionis. That's five rotation players, whereas the Celtics could basically make a one-for-one swap involving Jaylen Brown and draft capital.

If Giannis wants to chase a ring, he'll find a supporting cast more suited for the task in Boston.

Warriors' Star Acquisition Options Have Disappeared

2 of 4
Los Angeles Lakers v Golden State Warriors

Anthony Slater of ESPN reports LA Clippers owner Steve Ballmer continues to "maintain a firm stance against" a Kawhi Leonard trade, that intel "points toward" LeBron James sticking with the Los Angeles Lakers and that the the Warriors have "remained on the sideline" during the latest round of trade talks on Giannis Antetokounmpo.

It's starting to sound like Golden State's chances of returning to relevance are already gone.

Keep in mind that this is posturing season, which means the odds of LeBron or Leonard coming to the Warriors (via free agency and trade, respectively) are probably better than they seem at the moment. Changes are coming to both LA franchises, with the Lakers potentially making major upgrades in free agency and the Clips staring down the barrel of league-imposed punishments if the Aspiration investigation proves some of the more problematic allegations.

Sure, Antetokounmpo is a long shot. But that just means the Warriors could set their sights slightly lower. Think Trey Murphy III, Anthony Davis, Michael Porter Jr. or several other names who haven't even been hinted at yet.

It's way too early to concede that no worthwhile reinforcements are coming. The Dubs know they need significant talent upgrades to climb out of the Play-In mix, and all indications suggest they're motivated to make a move.

Verdict: Sell

Nic Claxton and Coby White Swapping Teams?

3 of 4
Atlanta Hawks v Brooklyn Nets

Every once in a while, you run across a trade rumor that makes enough sense for you to spend real mental energy trying to manifest it.

That's the case with some recent chatter about the Hornets and Nets having eyes for Nic Claxton and Coby White, respectively.

Per Michael Scotto of Hoopshype, Claxton is among the centers on Charlotte's trade radar, and "the Nets have expressed interest" in White dating back to his time with the Chicago Bulls. From there, it's not that hard to concoct sign-and-trade scenarios that would land the a major upgrade at the 5 in Charlotte while also giving the Nets a lead guard to run their offense.

White was a key performer down the stretch for the Hornets and would be a luxury third guard behind LaMelo Ball and Kon Knueppel. Claxton, though, would improve Charlotte's starting and closing lineups at an actual position of need. That makes him a more sensible fit—one that could stabilize the defense and add new dimensions to the offense with the playmaking he revealed last year.

Brooklyn could just sign White using cap space if it wanted to, but we're still buying this one because we want to see Claxton with the Hornets.

Thunder Looking to Trade Up

4 of 4
Sam Presti End of Season Media Availability

Per Marc J. Spears of Andscape, the Oklahoma City Thunder are feeling ambitious.

He reported "the Thunder are trying to move up. Not just the two first round picks, but the second-round pick, into the top 10."

Oklahoma City owns No. 12, No. 17 and No. 37 in the upcoming draft, a package that, on its face, would probably be enough to climb into the top 10 of most drafts. It's hard to say whether it'll be sufficient in this particular year, especially with rival teams lacking eagerness to help out a contender.

The Thunder's possible plan to climb up the draft board isn't just about securing a better talent. It's also about consolidation. If the team makes no cuts and adds two first-rounders to its payroll, it'll face a $286 million tax bill and a record overall expenditure of $554 million for 2026-27.

Those financial concerns are also why the Thunder's "most likely pathway...would be to trade [Lu Dort] for a second-round pick or two," according to The Athletic's John Hollinger. That move could trim $17.7 million from the payroll, plus the attendant tax penalties.
