Saturday Highlights

Netherlands 5, Sweden 1

The Netherlands pulled ahead early Saturday in Houston thanks to a quick brace from Brian Brobbey.

Sweden earned multiple scoring opportunities over the rest of the half, including a shot that was turned aside by Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

Gustaf Lagerbielke then headed in a goal off a free kick before he was ruled offside.

Cody Gakpo helped put the Netherlands up by four goals with a brace of his own early in the second half.

Sweden finally broke through in the 59th minute as Anthony Elanga scored shortly after subbing in.

The Netherlands later closed out the win with an 89th-minute goal from Crysencio Summerville, who hit the "night-night" celebration after scoring.

Sweden will look to regroup later this week when playing Japan this Thursday in Dallas.

Germany 2, Ivory Coast 1

Ivory Coast looked set for an upset win before Germany's substitution of Undav helped turn the tide late in Saturday's match in Toronto.

Germany's Aleksandar Pavlovic got the ball in the net first, but the 21st-minute score was ruled no goal due to physical contact with goalkeeper Yaha Fofana.

Ivory coast captain Franck Kessié then put his team on the board by capitalizing on Yan Diomande's cross in the 30th minute.

Germany had another goal disallowed in the 39th minute after Kai Havertz's tally was waved off.

After video review of the potential goal, officials ruled Ivory Coast's Odilon Koussounou had been tripped by Jamal Musiala in what was becoming an increasingly physical matchup.

Germany finally broke through in the 68th minute when Undav kicked in a cross from Nadiem Amiri.

Ivory Coast was unable to capitalize on a late opportunity in the penalty box before Undav completed his brace in stoppage time.

Undav's second goal sealed Germany's 2-1 win and sent his country on to the knockout round.

This marks Germany's first trip to the knockout round since 2014, when the country advanced to the final before defeating Argentina to win the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Ecuador 0, Curaçao 0

Take a bow, Room.

The Curaçao goalkeeper, who may be a familiar name to some American fans from his time on the Columbus Crew, turned in a brilliant performance in his team's 0-0 draw against Ecuador. He tallied an incredible 15 saves and earned a point for his nation in the Group E standings.

As for Ecuador, they will surely be dismayed by the result.

They finished with 75 percent of the possession and enjoyed a 15-3 advantage in shots on goal. But not even that statistical domination was enough to beat Room, who prevailed against a number of shots and golden opportunities right in front of the net.

While it felt like just a matter of time throughout the game until Ecuador finally broke through and found the back of the net, Room stood strong against the onslaught of offensive pressure with a combination of diving stops, deflections on tricky bounces and overall control of his back line.

It was an exercise of frustration for Ecuador, which will surely rue the failed chances during what was an important game after they lost their World Cup opener.

Still, Room had the game of his life on the sport's biggest stage.
