Cueto had an MRI on Wednesday after being placed on the DL, but Giants manager Bruce Bochy said the team will consider all possibilities before revealing the results of the exam.
"I don't think you rule out anything," he said. "That's why you look at the MRI and get different opinions."
Per Kerry Crowley of the Bay Area News Group, Bochy also said Cueto will be out for at least "a little while."
Injuries have been a problem for the Giants since the season began. Madison Bumgarner, Joe Panik and Hunter Pence are all on the disabled list.
The 32-year-old Cueto was off to a fantastic start this season with a 0.84 ERA with 26 strikeouts and 16 hits allowed in 32 innings over five starts. He gave up two runs over six innings in his last appearance against the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 28. Prior to that, he'd only allowed a single earned run all season.
