Andre Iguodala Starts at PG in Game 1 of Warriors-Spurs with Stephen Curry Out
With Stephen Curry sidelined by an MCL sprain, Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr has inserted Andre Iguodala into the starting lineup at point guard.
Golden State announced the lineup just ahead of its first-round opener against the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday:
While Iguodala averaged 25.4 minutes per game in 64 appearances this season, he made just seven starts.
Earlier in the day, the team announced Curry will continue his rehab and be re-evaluated in one week:
It comes as no surprise that Golden State will be without the two-time NBA MVP. When the injury happened, Kerr told reporters "there's no way" the superstar guard would play during the first round of the playoffs. And sure enough, he still has some work to do to get back on the court.
There is no replacing Curry, who was shooting 49.5 percent from the floor, 42.3 percent from beyond the arc and 92.1 percent from the line. However, the Warriors are fortunate enough to have a former All-Star they can turn to in the meantime.
In 2017-18, Iguodala averaged 6.0 points on 46.3 percent shooting, with 3.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. The 6'6", 215-pound forward-turned-guard was a starter for Golden State back in 2013-14 but wound up accepting a bench role in the best interest of the team.
Oddly enough, it was then that he was able to win the 2015 NBA Finals MVP while coming off the bench at times.
Iguodala has been known to come up big on the defensive end in the postseason. He'll be looked upon to score on occasion as well, but with Curry out, Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson will be expected to lead the way on offense.
