Cavaliers Trade Rumors: Grizzlies, Cavs 'Have Had No Dialogue' on Marc Gasol
The Cleveland Cavaliers and Memphis Grizzlies have reportedly had no discussions about a trade involving center Marc Gasol.
According to ESPN.com's Zach Lowe, Gasol "makes a ton of sense" as a player for Cleveland to target in exchange for the Brooklyn Nets' 2018 first-round draft pick that the Cavs own.
No such talks have taken place, however, and Lowe noted that the Grizzlies "appear happy to stand pat."
At 30-21, the Cavs are just percentage points ahead of the Washington Wizards for the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference.
Cleveland appears in desperate need of a shakeup with a record of just 4-8 over its past 12 games and 6-12 over its last 18 outings.
Despite that, Lowe reported rival executives are saying the Cavs "are acting as if they are not going to trade the Nets pick" in an effort to improve down the stretch.
If Cleveland were to make a major trade, Gasol would seem to be a great fit within a core that includes LeBron James, Kevin Love (when healthy) and Isaiah Thomas.
The 33-year-old Gasol is a three-time All-Star and one-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year who is enjoying another strong season.
In 51 games, the Spaniard is averaging 18.0 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.5 blocks.
The 18-34 Grizzlies could be set to enter rebuilding mode, though. Since Gasol has a player option for 2019-20, he is only guaranteed to be under contract for one more season beyond this one.
That makes him a possible trade piece for Memphis, but it also makes him a huge risk for the Cavaliers to acquire at the potential cost of a high lottery pick.
If the Cavs don't make a move of significance, however, their three-year streak of reaching the NBA Finals is in grave danger of coming to an end.
