Russell Westbrook Triple-Double Pushes Thunder Past Blake Griffin, Clippers

Alec NathanJan 4, 2018

It's safe to say the Oklahoma City Thunder feel at home in Southern California.

One day after throttling the Los Angeles Lakers by 37 points, the Thunder capped off their two-night stay at Staples Center with a 127-117 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday.

Russell Westbrook finished with 29 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists for his 13th triple-double of the season.

The NBA's Western Conference Player of the month for December was hardly OKC's only headliner, though.

Paul George thrived back in his hometown, and he poured in a game-high 31 points on 12-of-16 shooting, including a three from the right wing that ultimately dashed the Clippers' hopes with 2:05 remaining in regulation:

George has now topped 24 points in six straight appearances dating back to Dec. 23. During that stretch, he's looked exponentially more comfortable operating alongside Westbrook and Carmelo Anthony as they've figured out how to get the offense flowing in clutch situations.

"The biggest difference to me is Paul George," Clippers head coach Doc Rivers said of the Thunder's improved play, according to ESPN.com's Royce Young. "He looks comfortable now."

Anthony held up his end of the bargain as well and continued to thrive as an off-ball weapon—a new role he acknowledged would take some getting used to.

In 31 minutes, Anthony dropped 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting and passed Patrick Ewing for 21st on the NBA's all-time scoring list:

According to the Norman Transcript's Fred Katz, the Thunder offense has found its footing over the past couple of weeks:

The Clippers tried to hang tough in the fourth quarter, but Oklahoma City opened the period on a 12-0 run, and not even the sweet-shooting Lou Williams could propel L.A. back in front.

Williamswho ranks second in the NBA in fourth-quarter scoring behind LeBron James—dropped 13 of his 26 points in the final frame.

However, Blake Griffin (24 points, nine rebounds, seven assists) and DeAndre Jordan (26 points, 17 rebounds) were both quiet late as the Clippers' five-game winning streak was snapped.

To avoid consecutive losses, L.A. will need a more robust effort Saturday when the Golden State Warriors come to town.

The Thunder, meanwhile, will wrap up their three-game road trip Sunday evening against the Phoenix Suns
