Jonathon Simmons Reportedly Has Rights Renounced by Spurs; Becomes Free Agent
The San Antonio Spurs have renounced the rights to Jonathon Simmons, according to Shams Charania of The Vertical, making the wing an unrestricted free agent.
Jabari Young of the San Antonio Express-News reported that the Spurs "couldn't reach an agreement on a deal or trade," though Michael C. Wright of ESPN.com said he was told "the team will still engage him in discussions."
However, Young said a new deal with the Spurs has not been discussed.
As Dan Devin of Ball Don't Lie noted, Simmons may not find the big contract he wants in free agency:
Simmons, 27, averaged 6.2 points and 2.1 rebounds per game last season with San Antonio, coming off the bench for the team.
He was much more of a factor in the postseason, however, averaging 10.5 points in 20.4 minutes per game. With Kawhi Leonard missing most of the Western Conference Finals, Simmons stepped up in a big way, averaging 15.3 points and 3.3 assists in the four-game Warriors sweep.
"He's a fine talent," head coach Gregg Popovich said during the postseason, per Nick Silva of ESPN.com. "Somebody who is going to have a good future."
Whether that future remains with the Spurs will depend entirely on what sort of market develops for Simmons in free agency.
