LaVar Ball Says Lonzo Will Pass Magic Johnson as Best NBA Guard Ever
During the Los Angeles Lakers' Las Vegas Summer League game against the Boston Celtics on Saturday night, LaVar Ball said that his son Lonzo would become the greatest guard in NBA history.
On the ESPN broadcast, the elder Ball said current Lakers president Magic Johnson would pass the torch to Lonzo and that the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft would "step over" Magic en route to being the best guard ever.
Johnson is a Hall of Famer who enjoyed one of the most decorated careers in NBA history.
He was a 12-time All-Star, a three-time league MVP, a three-time NBA Finals MVP and a five-time NBA champion during his 13-year run with the Lakers.
For his career, Johnson averaged 19.5 points, 11.2 assists and 7.2 rebounds per game.
Ball was known for his do-everything skill set during his one college season at UCLA, putting up 14.6 points, 7.6 assists and 6.0 rebounds per game with the added element of being a lethal three-point shooter.
The rookie's NBA career got off to a dubious start Friday, however, as he scored just five points on 2-of-15 shooting in his Summer League debut.
Magic netted 26 points in his NBA regular-season debut in 1979, and while Ball's start was less than ideal, he has nearly four months of preparation before the games officially begin to count.
