Taylor Swift Congratulates Russell Westbrook on Winning 2017 NBA MVP Award
The haters are always going to hate, hate, hate when an MVP race is as tightly contested as this season's, but Oklahoma City Thunder star Russell Westbrook was able to shake off challenges from San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard and Houston Rockets guard James Harden to win the award.
Singer Taylor Swift congratulated Westbrook on his first career MVP Monday, as the team shared:
Even though Kevin Durant created some bad blood when he suggested he would never, ever, ever get back together with the Thunder when he left for the Golden State Warriors this offseason, Westbrook led his team to the playoffs behind one of the best individual seasons in NBA history.
He led the league in scoring with 31.6 points per game and became just the second player in NBA history to average a triple-double for an entire season (10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists a night). Westbrook also beat Oscar Robertson's record for triple-doubles in a single campaign with 42.
He was given the award Monday during the first-ever NBA Awards Show and became emotional during his speech:
While his season ended with a disappointing five-game series loss to Harden's Rockets in the first round of the playoffs, it took nothing away from his individual achievements on the court during the regular season.
Regardless of what happens the rest of his career, Westbrook can now always sing "You Belong With Me" to the MVP trophy. Swift would probably be happy to help.
