Warriors Become 1st Team in NBA History to Start Playoffs 13-0 with Game 1 Win
The Golden State Warriors steamrolled the Cleveland Cavaliers 113-91 in Thursday's Game 1 of the NBA Finals and made history in the process.
The Warriors announced they became the first team to start the NBA playoffs 13-0 with the victory.
Kevin Durant (38 points, eight assists and eight rebounds) and Stephen Curry (28 points, 10 assists and six rebounds) led the way for the Warriors. While they were the only two Golden State players in double figures, the defense was strong and forced 20 Cavaliers turnovers.
The defense has been a focal point throughout the 13-game winning streak considering the Warriors boast a league-best postseason defensive rating of 98.3, per NBA.com.
Golden State has remained relatively healthy on the floor during the record-setting winning streak, but it accomplished the majority of the feat without head coach Steve Kerr. Anthony Slater of the Mercury News noted Mike Brown has filled in for Kerr since Game 2 of the first round against the Portland Trail Blazers because of complications from Kerr's previous back surgery.
While the winning streak is impressive, all that matters for Golden State is tallying win No. 16 in these playoffs. This is a group that set the NBA record of 73 wins in a regular season last year, but the luster of the accomplishment faded away after blowing a 3-1 lead in the Finals to the Cavaliers.
If the Warriors can't parlay this record into the Larry O'Brien Trophy, it too will lose plenty of its luster.
