Darren Collison, Pacers Reportedly Agree to 2-Year, $20 Million Contract
Veteran guard Darren Collison reportedly will sign a two-year, $20 million contract with the Indiana Pacers, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Collison, 29, averaged 13.2 points, 4.6 assists and 1.0 steals per game in the 2016-17 season for the Sacramento Kings, starting 63 of the 68 games he played. He combined with Buddy Hield down the stretch of the season to give the Kings a solid backcourt following the DeMarcus Cousins trade.
He also shot a career-best 41.7 percent beyond the arc, making him an appealing veteran pickup for the Pacers this summer.
While Collison isn't a headline-stealing addition, he's a solid veteran who will either provide scoring and ball-handling off the bench or offer the team a reliable starting option. He has consistently averaged double-digit points and a handful of assists in his career, and his improved perimeter shooting is a plus as well.
Despite the loss of Paul George, the Pacers will be hoping Collison is the sort of low-profile but efficient addition that still helps them reach the postseason.
In Indiana, Collison will replace Jeff Teague, who reportedly has agreed to a contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves, per Wojnarowski. He'll combine with Myles Turner, Thaddeus Young, Victor Oladipo, Domantas Sabonis and rookie T.J. Leaf to give the Pacers an interesting core.
Whether that will be enough to get the team back to the postseason with George gone—even in the weaker Eastern Conference—remains questionable, however.
