Houston Rockets Post Franchise-Record 48th Consecutive Game with 100+ Points
Wednesday evening marked the 48th consecutive game in which the Houston Rockets have tallied at least 100 points, setting a franchise record, per Calvin Watkins of ESPN.com.
Houston demolished the Los Angeles Clippers 122-103 in the affair, winning its third consecutive contest and seventh in the last nine. The club tallies the second-most points per game (115.1) in the NBA, trailing only the Golden State Warriors (118.0) in the category.
Much of the team's damage comes from behind the three-point line. The Rockets made at least 20 three-point baskets for the ninth time this season Wednesday, becoming the first team to do so, per the Elias Sports Bureau (via ESPN.com).
In fact, only once since the three-point line was introduced in 1979-80 has the league as a whole had nine such instances in a year. That occurred last season, led by a Warriors club who notched 20 three-point makes seven times. The Seattle Supersonics were the first team to reach the total in a single game, making 20 in a 1996 playoff game, according to Elias.
The Rockets have employed an outshoot-the-opponent approach this season, and it has worked for them. Only six other teams have allowed more points per game than the Rockets (108.3) this season. Of those, just the Denver Nuggets (28-33) currently sit in position to make the playoffs. That hasn't stopped Houston from succeeding with the strategy.
Nearing the stretch run of the regular season, the team owns the third-best record in the Western Conference behind the Warriors and the San Antonio Spurs. Houston owns a 1-2 record against San Antonio and a 1-1 mark against Golden State this campaign.
The franchise's season has ended at the hands of the Warriors in each of the last two years. Perhaps 2016-17 will finally provide the Rockets with an opportunity to make their first NBA Finals since they won back-to-back titles in 1993-94 and 1994-95. They would likely need to overcome both the Spurs and Warriors to do so.
