Chris Bosh Says His Health Is 'Great,' Discusses Life Away from Basketball
Miami Heat big man Chris Bosh has not appeared in an NBA game since February 2016 but said "my health is great" while appearing on TNT's Players Only Monday broadcast, via the Associated Press (h/t ESPN.com).
"I'm feeling good, still working out and just really still staying ready," the 11-time All-Star added.
The AP noted Bosh's 2014-15 and 2015-16 campaigns both ended because of blood clots, and he hasn't been with the Heat this season after he failed a physical in September even though he is still under contract.
Miami has the option to shed that contract—which pays Bosh more than $52 million guaranteed over the next two seasons—from its salary cap because he has been away for more than a year, per the AP. The AP said the Heat are "certain" to look for some type of cap relief during the offseason.
They have missed Bosh, who helped lead them to two championship rings alongside LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. Bosh has averaged 19.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game in 13 seasons for the Toronto Raptors and Miami.
Even without the big man, the Heat are 27-33 and just 1.5 games out of the No. 8 spot in the East after winning 16 of their last 20 contests. Bosh said he was proud of the players during Monday's broadcast but that not being around them and keeping a normal schedule has been challenging.
"I think one of the interesting things that I didn't anticipate was my mental health, and that's something that as athletes we have to take into regard because we're used to a set schedule and we're used to a certain type of world," Bosh said. "And that's something that I've really had to work on for my well-being."
Despite opening up on TNT, Bosh did not give any indication if or when he will return to the NBA.
