Manchester City Transfer News: Latest Leonardo Bonucci Rumours Amid Chelsea Talk

Christopher SimpsonFeb 24, 2017

Leonardo Bonucci's spat with Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri has reportedly "put Manchester City and Chelsea on red alert," though the defender has apologised to his manager.

That's according to The Sun's Martin Blackburn, who added that City boss Pep Guardiola is a known admirer of the defender's and attempted to sign him last summer, while Chelsea manager Antonio Conte worked with him at Juve and later as Italy coach.

The centre-back rowed with Allegri on camera during Friday's 4-1 win over Palermo and was punished for the incident by being left out of Wednesday's UEFA Champions League tie with Porto. However, the pair have now made up.

Allegri told Sky Sports (h/t GianlucaDiMarzio.com): "It's a shame that we had the incident on Friday. These are things that happen during the season, I'll go as far as thanking him for raising the emotional tension. But Leo has apologised, and everything has been resolved."

Indeed, Bleacher Report UK's Adam Digby does not believe the row will have an impact on Bonucci's future at the club:

Juventus went on to beat Porto 2-0 away from home.

Nevertheless, BeIN Sports' Matteo Bonetti and Fox Sports' Aaron West believed him to be a significant loss:

His ability to play the ball out from the back is surely what appeals to Guardiola, and the 29-year-old would make an exceptional addition to City's defence.

The Bianconeri often play with a back three comprised of Bonucci, Andrea Barzagli and Giorgio Chiellini, with Bonucci frequently tasked with bringing the ball out from the back or making interceptions when the opposition pushes forward, while Chiellini tends to be involved in more physical duels.

Juventus have also recently played with a back four, with Bonucci and Chiellini playing together in the centre.

Bonucci is not just admired for his technical ability, he's also an accomplished defender, and he's helped Juventus concede just 17 goals in Serie A matches this season.

City particularly need someone of his talents, as they've been vulnerable at the back throughout the season and only Liverpool have shipped more than their 29 goals in the Premier League's top seven.

Chelsea are more assured at the back with Cesar Azpilicueta, David Luiz and Gary Cahill proving to be a formidable defensive line, while Kurt Zouma and Nathan Ake are strong cover options, though Bonucci would be an upgrade on perhaps all of them.

Juve possess four other excellent centre-backs, with Daniele Rugani and Medhi Benatia also capable players, but with Chiellini and Barzagli turning 33 and 36, respectively, in the summer, the club will be loath to let go of such a valuable asset who has several more years left at the top of his game.

Unless more problems with Allegri emerge, landing him will still be difficult this summer.
