NBA Rumors: Last-Minute Trade Reports Before 2017 Deadline

Paul KasabianFeb 23, 2017

If you haven't checked Twitter within the last five minutes, that means you likely don't have all the latest information surrounding the NBA trade deadline.

News is arriving at warp speed around the league. Let's dive into the latest on five different players.

Paul George

The Boston Celtics have been connected to trade rumors all week. Will anything come to fruition?

Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical reported the following news Thursday:

Zach Lowe of ESPN also provided some commentary in response to Wojnarowski's tweets:

Boston needs to make a crucial decision: Go for it all this year (and the next few seasons), or use the assets it has and try to build a tremendous future.

Do the C's value having Paul George more, or do they value holding on to a few current members of their rotation plus the possibility of landing the No. 1 pick in the 2017 NBA draft?

There's an additional caveat as well. George is a free agent in the summer of 2018, so he could skip town after one-and-a-half seasons as a Celtic. He could potentially go to Los Angeles and play for his hometown Lakers, who have the cap space to pick PG-13 up next year.

If the C's grab George for a haul and are left hanging at the altar in 2018, then the move will be all for nothing.

The guess here is Boston holds tight and does nothing major before the deadline.

Wilson Chandler and P.J. Tucker

The Toronto Raptors traded for Orlando Magic power forward Serge Ibaka, but they may not be done.

The Raps are in the market for a small forward, per Marc Stein of ESPN.

It's been the Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan show every night in Toronto this season, with Jonas Valanciunas chipping in with the occasional double double.

The two star guards need more help to lighten the scoring load (together, Lowry and DDR account for 42.7 percent of the Raptors' points per night) and become more of a balanced team.

Ibaka was a good start, but grabbing a player like Wilson Chandler, who averages 15.6 points per game and can play small forward or stretch power forward, will be very beneficial to the Raps.

P.J. Tucker is a gritty glue guy who plays good defense, and he would be a good fit on most teams, but he's not much of a scoring threat, so the Raptors should try to make Chandler their Plan A and Tucker their Plan B.

Derrick Rose and Ricky Rubio

If New York Knicks point guard Derrick Rose heads out of town Thursday, it will likely be north to Minnesota for Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio.

Ian Begley of ESPN has been first with all the Rose news lately and provided the most recent information Thursday:

"

In talks with Minnesota on a potential Derrick Rose deal, the Knicks had been seeking multiple players or a player and a draft pick in return, sources said. Point guard Ricky Rubio is the obvious candidate because he and Rose could be traded in a one-for-one deal.

"

Marc Stein of ESPN also reported the Knicks and T-Wolves are working the phones:

The deal is a no-brainer for the Knicks, who need a pass-first point guard in Rubio to facilitate to Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis. At times KP's development has been stung by Rose jacking upwards of 20-plus shots per game and looking to score rather than pass.

Rubio is a dismal shooter, making fewer than 40 percent of his field goals this season, so that's a negative the Knicks would have to assume.

However, the offense would flow better through Anthony and KP, so the move makes a lot of sense for New York.

T-Wolves president of basketball operations and head coach Tom Thibodeau is obviously looking to reunite with Rose and try to re-capture some of the success the two had in Chicago, where Rose won the 2010-11 MVP.

Rose is still a good player, but one has to wonder whether he would fit well on a Timberwolves team that sorely needs defensive help. Rose can't provide that, as he's not a good defender right now, and he would make much more sense on a team looking for some offensive life.
