Jason Peters Reportedly Will Remain with Philadelphia Eagles

Tim DanielsFeb 23, 2017

The Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly planning to keep veteran offensive lineman Jason Peters on their roster for the 2017 season.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Thursday there's no truth to speculation about the tackle's potential departure, calling the decision to keep him "not a surprise."

Questions about Peters' future with the Eagles became amplified after Tim McManus of ESPN reported in early February the front office had asked the 35-year-old Arkansas product about taking a pay cut.

The nine-time Pro Bowler is scheduled to count $11.2 million against the cap in 2017 and $11.25 million in 2018, the final year of his current deal, per Spotrac. Releasing him would leave just $2 million in dead cap space.

Yet it never appeared the Eagles were on the verge of letting him go.

General manager Howie Roseman stated in January they expected Peters to remain with the team next season, according to Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

"The first part with Jason Peters: We started this press conference talking about Brian Dawkins [as a Hall of Fame finalist]. I have no doubt at some point we'll be saying the same thing about Jason Peters," Roseman said. "He has really ingrained himself as a leader of this football team. Anyone who watched us play saw the impact he has on the game. We certainly want to have him back."

Even though the contract situation isn't ideal for a player in the latter stages of his career, the void he'd leave would be nearly impossible to fill in the short term.

Pro Football Focus rated Peters as the top asset on the Eagles line, which it ranked as the eighth-best group in the NFL for the 2016 campaign. He also checked in as the No. 78 overall player in the NFL last season in the annual PFF rankings.

Peters told Berman in November he doesn't look too far into the future, but he'd really like to capture a championship before hanging up his cleats.

"I'm just chasing the dream that everyone is—to play this game and get to a Super Bowl," he said. "I've told coach [Doug Pederson] that I'm year-to-year, but I'm not leaving until I try to get that ring."

Winning a title with Philadelphia next season would be a long shot, though: OddsShark has the Eagles at 50/1.
