Cameron Comments on Future

Tuesday, Nov. 29

"I'm not shutting the door on anything," Cameron said, per Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald. "I'm going to wait until after the season. I'm kind of glad I get to talk to you because everyone's counting me out -- he's done, he's retiring. No, I'm not. I'll think about that after the season. That's really all I have to say about it."

Cameron to Continue Playing Despite Considering Retirement

Monday, Nov. 7

Dolphins head coach Adam Gase told reporters Cameron did consider retirement but said he wants to continue playing.

Jason Lieser of the Palm Beach Post shared more comments from Gase on Cameron's health:

"

We felt like it still was going to be some more time. We want to make sure he’s comfortable when he gets to a point where they say he’s cleared that there’s no hesitation for him. You have the protocol, but then the guy still has to feel he’s good to go. Obviously when you have a couple, you want to make sure everything’s right. We sent him back to Pittsburgh and made sure he’s seeing all the right doctors.

As far as talking to him, he’s been very positive with me. He wants to keep playing. But right now, we weren’t sure how long he was going to be out, so that’s why we went the IR route, which is good for him because he can really do his homework and evaluate everything. But the sense I’ve gotten from him as far as down the road is that he wants to keep playing.

"

On Saturday, ESPN's Adam Schefter (via ESPN.com), reported Cameron was weighing retirement after being placed on injured reserve with another concussion.

Cameron Has Extensive History of Concussions

Cameron hasn't played since Week 3 against the Cleveland Browns when he suffered his latest concussion.

Per Beasley, Cameron has suffered four concussions in the last four years. He played all 16 games last season, his first with the Dolphins, for the first time in his career. It was also the first year since 2012 in which he didn't suffer a concussion.

Gase said in Beasley's report he wasn't aware of any lingering concerns over Cameron's concussions:

"

I think if anybody had any concerns in this organization, that would have been brought to me. I know that I've been around a few guys that over time, it has gone up. I know Wes [Welker] had quite a few before I was with him in Denver, and then we had too many when I was with him in those last couple of years.

"

As a result of Cameron's injuries and inability to stay on the field, his performance has declined since a breakout 2013 when he had 80 receptions for 917 yards and seven touchdowns.

In 19 games with the Dolphins, Cameron has just 43 receptions for 446 yards and four touchdowns. The 28-year-old emerged as a fourth-round pick in 2011 to become a valuable starting tight end before injuries derailed his career.
