Isaiah Canaan to Bulls: Contract Details, Reaction
Free-agent guard Isaiah Canaan has agreed to a contract with the Chicago Bulls, the team announced on Wednesday.
Chris Haynes of Cleveland.com first reported the two-year, $2.2 million deal on July 12.
Canaan averaged 11 points per game last season with the Philadelphia 76ers. He started a career-high 39 games in the process, albeit with a 76ers team that went 10-72 for the season.
He'll be entering a much different situation in Chicago, which will have a new-look rotation at the point guard position.
Since the last weeks of June, the Bulls have traded away Derrick Rose to the New York Knicks in return for Jose Calderon and Jerian Grant, signed Rajon Rondo and then dealt Calderon to the Los Angeles Lakers in order to make room for new signing Dwyane Wade.
With that kind of talent in the backcourt, there is little chance Canaan will come remotely near that 39-games-started mark he set last season.
He is not an effective shooter, with a career field-goal percentage of 36.8 and a three-point percentage of 36.3 while averaging just 1.8 assists per game in his three years in the league.
But the Bulls won't expect him to lead the offense like Philadelphia did.
However, Canaan is an athletic point guard with good enough handles to make him a difficult player to defend:
If Canaan is able to bring an aggressive style of play to Chicago, then his athleticism on a much more talented roster than Philadelphia's could open up scoring opportunities for the likes of Wade and Jimmy Butler while Rondo rests.
While this is nothing more than a depth signing for Chicago, Canaan is a low-cost acquisition who could provide productive minutes if the Bulls use him correctly.
