Josh McRoberts, 2nd-Round Pick Traded to Dallas Mavericks for A.J. Hammons
The Miami Heat have reached an agreement to trade power forward Josh McRoberts, a future second-round draft pick and cash considerations to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for A.J. Hammons, the Miami Heat announced Friday.
Mavs.com's Earl K. Sneed first reported the news.
McRoberts joined the Heat three years ago after enjoying a resurgent 2013-14 campaign with the Charlotte Bobcats. He failed to make much of an impact in Miami, however, appearing in just 81 games over the last three seasons due to injury woes.
The 30-year-old Duke product suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee early in his first season with the Heat, which limited him to 17 games. While he returned to the floor for 42 contests two years ago, he spent more time on the sidelines with knee issues.
McRoberts was subsequently limited to 22 appearances during the 2016-17 campaign because of a stress reaction in his left foot.
He averaged 4.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists on 37.3 percent shooting from the field and 41.9 percent shooting from three last season.
The 10-year veteran is due $6 million next season, and the Heat were motivated to dump his salary to clear space to sign veterans Kelly Olynyk and James Johnson, as noted by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Hammons, meanwhile, is due a shade over $1.3 million this season and $1.5 million the next before he becomes a restricted free agent.
Provided he can stay healthy, McRoberts should have an opportunity to carve out a more consistent role with the Mavericks, who could use additional depth at the 4 behind Harrison Barnes and Dwight Powell.
