Timofey Mozgov Reportedly Will Sign with Lakers
Cleveland Cavaliers center Timofey Mozgov didn't last long on the free-agent market, as he has reportedly agreed to a deal with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical reported the Lakers and Mozgov agreed to a four-year, $64 million contract. Ken Berger of CBS Sports confirmed the deal.
The Lakers weren't the only team to express interest in Mozgov. Ian Begley of ESPN.com reported Tuesday that the New York Knicks were considering Mozgov as a potential alternative to the more widely coveted Joakim Noah.
Mozgov played a limited role for the NBA champion Cavs this past season. He averaged 6.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 0.8 blocks across 76 games during the regular season. Those numbers, along with his minutes per game (17.4), all represented his lowest output since the 2012-13 campaign.
He then played 5.8 minutes per game in 13 postseason appearances, as Cleveland leaned on Tristan Thompson and Channing Frye alongside Kevin Love in the frontcourt.
Back in March, the center told Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon Journal that a lot of his struggles at both ends of the floor were more about the mental side of the game: "I've got a lot of [stuff] in my head. I'm not going to share it to nobody. You ask me what's going on in my head, you're not going to find out. Only Sasha [Kaun] knows. You don't want to be there, trust me."
Though he wasn't willing to provide further details at the time, it was clear as the team geared up for what became a long-awaited title run that he was a shell of the player who averaged 10.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.2 blocks for the Cavaliers down the stretch of the 2014-15 season.
Perhaps Mozgov and the Lakers will get back on track together.
