Chandler Parsons Reportedly to Sign with Grizzlies
After declining his player option with the Dallas Mavericks, forward Chandler Parsons reportedly agreed to sign a four-year max contract with the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday.
Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical was the first to report the four-year, $94 million pact, and ESPN.com's Tim MacMahon provided confirmation.
The 27-year-old University of Florida alumnus is set to enter his sixth NBA season following another injury-plagued campaign in 2015-16.
Parsons missed 21 regular-season games—including the Mavs' playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder—after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee.
Although his numbers were down a bit in comparison to previous seasons, Parsons still enjoyed a productive year, with averages of 13.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. He also had his most efficient season from a shooting perspective with a career-best field-goal percentage (.492) and three-point percentage (.414).
After averaging at least 15.5 points per game in each of the previous three seasons split between the Mavericks and the Houston Rockets, however, Parsons entered free agency with a bit of uncertainty.
Durability concerns are near the top of that list, as he has never played in more than 76 games in a single season. He missed 37 contests combined over the past two years.
When Parsons is healthy and in the lineup, he is a do-everything player.
The former second-round pick has primarily been a complementary piece rather than a go-to guy over the course of his career, although the size of his contract could dictate that he has an increased role moving forward.
Parsons has a chance to be game-changing signing for the Grizz, but he is an equally big loss for the Mavs considering everything he brought to the table at both ends of the floor.
Dallas has had some misfortune in free agency in recent years, particularly after losing out on center DeAndre Jordan last offseason, and Parsons' departure is the latest stroke of bad luck.
The Mavs managed to make the playoffs last season despite being without Parsons down the stretch, but after losing him entirely, the 2016-17 campaign could be a long and arduous one.
Memphis was on the fringes of the playoffs last season before sneaking in, and with a healthy Marc Gasol returning and the addition of Parsons, it has a strong opportunity to get back to the tier just behind the Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference.
Doing so may also be contingent upon the return of free-agent point guard Mike Conley, but with Parsons and his all-around skill set on board, Memphis suddenly becomes a far more attractive situation for Conley and other potential signings.
