Arron Afflalo Reportedly to Sign with Kings: Contract Details, Reaction

Tyler ConwayJul 2, 2016

After a disappointing one-year stop with the New York Knicks, Arron Afflalo is headed to the Sacramento Kings

The veteran guard agreed to a two-year, $25 million deal, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical. Sam Amick of USA Today later confirmed the signing.

Afflalo, 30, averaged 12.8 points and 3.7 rebounds last season in New York. He appeared in 71 games, starting 57, and put up solid shooting splits for the most part.

A career 38.5 percent shooter from three-point range, Afflalo knocked down 38.2 percent in 2015-16 and 44.3 percent of his field goals overall. The differences were mostly the result of usage, as Afflalo's rate (17.9) dipped to its lowest since 2011-12, per Basketball-Reference.com.

Afflalo found himself a little lost at times despite having a game that is ready-made for the triangle. His free throws basically evaporated amid the transition to system basketball, which frowns upon individual drives to the basket.

The last two seasons have harmed Afflalo's standing around the league. The UCLA product had increased his scoring average in each of his first seven NBA seasons, peaking at 18.2 points per game in 2013-14. By the end of this past season, Afflalo was sitting on the bench in favor of Sasha Vujacic.

“I guess it’s just my job to be professional and give the team whatever they feel is necessary,” Afflalo said in March, per Fred Kerber of the New York Post.

The Knicks did not keep Kurt Rambis on as their head coach after he served in an interim role, but he will be an assistant under new top man Jeff Hornacek. It's not hard to look at the through line and wonder how much the benching alienated Afflalo.

At this point in his career, Afflalo is teetering on the edge of starter and elite role player. But tossing him on the bench at the end of a bad season—and likely depressing his value—was a bad look. Afflalo stretches the floor, can create for himself in a pinch and is at least an average defender.

Those guys have value in today's NBA, and Sacramento is getting a relative bargain in part because he had a less than stellar New York experience. Heading into his age-31 season, what you see is what you get with Afflalo. Given his career trajectory, that should be just fine.

While Afflalo's tenure in New York didn't end in ideal fashion, he has a chance to rebuild his value and credibility with the Kings.

He joins a Sacramento team with just two guards under contract in Darren Collison and Ben McLemore, and he figures to step into the starting lineup at shooting guard instantly.

The Kings boast a talented frontcourt led by DeMarcus Cousins, Willie Cauley-Stein and Rudy Gay, so if Afflalo can supplement them with efficient shooting and strong perimeter defense, Sacramento may inch closer to playoff contention after missing out on the postseason for 10 straight years.
