J.R. Smith Names LeBron James, Russell Westbrook as MVP Picks over Stephen Curry
If it were up to J.R. Smith, LeBron James would have been named the 2015-16 NBA Most Valuable Player.
At least that's what the Cleveland Cavaliers guard told media on Thursday ahead of his team's 108-97 loss in Game 4 of the NBA Finals.
"Other than LeBron, I don’t really know who else to vote for," he said, per Michael Singer of USA Today. "There's not more of a complete player, so I don't see how he couldn't be the most valuable."
If Smith had to look outside the Cavs, however, Golden State Warriors star and back-to-back actual MVP Stephen Curry still wouldn't be his first pick—it would be Oklahoma City guard Russell Westbrook.
"If I couldn’t vote for somebody on my own team I’d probably vote for a guy like Russ," he said. "I mean, he's energy, effort, consistently, got the total package. You gotta go for a guy like that."
So where would Curry, the first unanimous NBA MVP, fit on his list?
"Would he be in my top five? I mean, yeah, he’s very valuable to the team, to what they do," Smith said. "If you take him out of the equation I think they’re a totally different team, but I mean he would definitely be in there. Absolutely."
James finished third in actual voting this season, behind second-place San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard. Westbrook came in fourth.
The Cavaliers trail Curry and the Warriors 3-1 in the series.
