On July 7, Jon Heyman of Today's Knuckleball reported that the Cubs have Miller at the top of their trade wish list.

On June 12, the New York Post's George A. King III, citing industry sources, reported that Cubs scout Jason Parks was at Yankee Stadium looking at Miller as well as Chapman and Dellin Betances.

The Chicago Sun-TimesGordon Wittenmyer, citing one major league source, reported that "the Cubs have made it known they’re prepared to strike early to add pitching."

Yankees Reportedly Scouting Nationals Prospects

Miller Comments on Trade Rumors

Sunday, July 3

When asked about the possibility of a trade, Miller said Yankees executives have assured him they don't plan on dealing him, per Barry M. Bloom of MLB.com:

"

The media has been throwing a few things out there, but I've had reassurances from them at the times I've talked to them that it's something that hasn't been discussed or planned for or anything like that. I think that's kind of nice.

But I have no trade protection. I'm at the mercy of that what they decide to do. I get it. It's a business. I want to be here. I want to play here. But it's impossible to avoid sometimes.

Miller Linked to Giants

Saturday, June 4

Rosenthal reported that the San Francisco Giants have internally discussed acquiring Miller.

In order to trade for Miller, the Giants could have to part with top pitching prospect Tyler Beede, according to Rosenthal.

Miller would be a huge addition to the Giants bullpen. The team does not have an elite lineup or pitching staff, so adding Miller would help secure leads that could be blown by poor pitching or are insurmountable with an average offense.

Miller is in the second year of a four-year, $36 million deal, which is a relatively friendly contract for a top-notch reliever who can boost a World Series contender.

The Yankees need starting pitching, and the Giants need an anchor in the bullpen, so this trade would make a lot of sense for both sides.

Miller a Coveted Player to Bolster Bullpen

Miller has been the subject of trade rumors throughout the early part of this season. He is a key member of an explosive bullpen that features Betances and Chapman, but USA Today's Bob Nightengale speculated on May 27 that if the Yankees are not contending by the July 31 trade deadline, Miller may be gone.

New York general manager Brian Cashman acknowledged this, per Nightengale.

"If we’re in there, we’ll be trying to add," Cashman said on May 26. "If we’re not good enough, then, it will be the opposite.

"[Betances, Chapman and Miller] are valuable, that’s why we have them."

The Yankees are 48-46 and fourth in the American League East. They are also in the bottom third of the AL in runs scored. So while New York has a powerful bullpen, the team is not scoring enough runs to utilize it.
