Jeff Green Reportedly to Sign with Magic: Contract Details, Reaction

Tyler ConwayJul 1, 2016

Though he hasn't been able to realize the potential that made him a top-five pick in the 2007 NBA draft, Jeff Green has settled into the role of reliable starting swingman, which the Orlando Magic will look to take advantage of next year.

Per Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today and Shams Charania of The Vertical, Green will reportedly sign a one-year deal with the Magic worth $15 million.

Green, who will turn 30 years old in August, split last season with the Los Angeles Clippers and Memphis Grizzlies. He finished with averages of 11.7 points and 4.2 rebounds per game, appearing in 80 games overall.

The Magic will be Green's fifth NBA franchise and his fourth in the last three seasons. He also played for the Oklahoma City Thunder and Boston Celtics. He'll fill a key stopgap role in Orlando after the team dealt Victor Oladipo to Oklahoma City for Serge Ibaka on draft night in June.

Green has always been a conundrum. At times, he can look like a bona fide star. He was the Celtics' best offensive weapon during their 2013 first-round series against the New York Knicks. He has flashed a number of intermittent bursts of stardom seemingly at random over the years.

But Green is likely who he is at this point. NBA players don't suddenly take leaps nearly a decade into their careers. He is likely going to average somewhere between 10 and 14 points per game, grab a handful of rebounds and knock down just enough shots from three-point range.

The Clippers were a markedly better defensive team with him on the bench; the Grizzlies were better with him on the floor. Opponents shot 1.5 percent better than their regular-season averages when Green defended them last season, per NBA.com.

The Magic, in that sense, know what they are getting. Green is going to give them solid minutes and not act as a glaring minus on either end of the floor. He'll occasionally make you think he's capable of more than what he is. As the NBA's salary cap goes soaring amid the start of the new television deal, $15 million for just one year makes some sense.
