Terry Stotts, Portland Trail Blazers Agree to New Contract

Mike ChiariMay 14, 2016

Head coach Terry Stotts led the Portland Trail Blazers to a shockingly good season in 2015-16, and he will now remain with the team for the foreseeable future.

Stotts and the Blazers agreed on a contract extension on Monday, according to The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski, who added it's a three-year deal that will keep Stotts in Portland through the end of the 2020 season.

USA Today's Sam Amick confirmed the news, adding the amount will be $5 million annually.

Few expected the Blazers to reach the postseason after superstar forward LaMarcus Aldridge signed with the San Antonio Spurs last offseason, but they did precisely that thanks to the dynamic backcourt duo of Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum.

It marked the team's third consecutive playoff appearance under Stotts, who holds a 182-146 record in four years at the helm in Portland.

After his team secured the No. 5 seed in the Western Conference and upset the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round of the playoffs, Stotts would have been a hot commodity on the open market if the Blazers had decided against keeping him.

Stotts likely would have garnered Coach of the Year consideration if not for Steve Kerr leading the Golden State Warriors to an NBA-record 73 wins, and that was clearly enough for Portland to keep him in the fold.
