Dahntay Jones to Cavaliers: Latest Contract Details, Comments, Reaction
The Cleveland Cavaliers bolstered their backcourt depth on the final day of the regular season Wednesday by signing veteran guard Dahntay Jones.
The Cavs confirmed the addition on their official website. Although terms of the agreement were not immediately released, the team noted he'll be eligible for postseason play.
Jones appeared in 33 games for the Los Angeles Clippers last season. He averaged less than a point per game while shooting 28.6 percent from the field in limited playing time.
The 35-year-old Duke product signed with the Brooklyn Nets in September, but he didn't make the team's final roster for the regular season. He ended up joining the NBA Development League's Grand Rapids Drive in December.
Jones put together a solid campaign in the D-League. He averaged 15.7 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists across 43 games, including 39 starts. Most notably, he shot 41.3 percent from beyond the arc, which could give him niche value to Cleveland.
The other benefit from signing him at this stage of the season is leadership. It's something he was happy to provide during his stint in Grand Rapids, per Peter J. Wallner of MLive.com: "I've grown to embrace that. I've been taught by a lot of great professionals in the NBA and at the college level on how to get an edge, and I'm happy to share that knowledge I've acquired."
Jones isn't likely to see the court too often during the team's playoff run. He may see a couple of minutes as a potential spark plug off the bench when Cleveland is looking for offense, but the main rotation is basically set at this point.
That said, the Cavaliers had an open roster spot, and picking up another battle-tested veteran who can provide a steadying voice in the locker room after a drama-filled season makes sense.
