Unsurprisingly, much of the discussion surrounding this game revolves around the quarterbacks.
Cam Newton has been a star for the Panthers this season and is a favorite to bring home the league's Most Valuable Player award. He has been even better as of late, with 24 touchdowns and just two interceptions in the last 10 games, including the playoffs. He also has seven rushing touchdowns in this stretch.
As his coach Ron Rivera explained to ESPN's Mike and Mike, the quarterback also has the mentality that allows him to succeed:
The "swagger" has rubbed some people the wrong way this year. Newton is certainly known for his excessive dancing when he scores or has a big play, certainly having a lot of fun playing the game. Then again, opposing quarterback Peyton Manning has no problem with this attitude. The veteran explained his thoughts this week, per Timothy Burke of Deadspin:
Manning doesn't have the mobility of Newton and at this point doesn't have the arm strength, either. However, what he does have is intelligence and the instincts to run an offense to perfection. The future Hall of Famer is known to be audible at the line of scrimmage, and opposing defenses are often left a step behind.
If the run game is working well, Manning can be successful working off play-action and finding his talented receivers like Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders down the field.
As good as the quarterbacks can be, though, this game will likely come down to the defenses. Ed Werder of ESPN broke down the strengths of the two units:
Denver is simply difficult to do anything against. With top pass-rushers like Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware putting pressure on the quarterback and Chris Harris and Aqib Talib patrolling the secondary, this defense can stop an aerial attack in a pass-heavy era of football. The interior defensive line is just as dangerous to slow down the run.
Meanwhile, Carolina has allowed some big plays, but it is also more dangerous with its ability to create turnovers. Linebacker Luke Kuechly and cornerback Josh Norman are among the best in the NFL at their positions, and both of them are capable of making plays on the ball anywhere on the field.
The elite players on both sides of the ball will ensure this remains an entertaining game from start to finish, no matter who wins.
