5 Teams Most Likely to Trade for 49ers Quarterback Colin Kaepernick in 2016

Grant CohnNov 15, 2015

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick wants out after this season, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.

“I think the (Kaepernick) feels like he has been undermined by this organization, he hasn’t been supported by this organization,” Barrows told KNBR's Gary and Larry Podcast on November 11.

Kaepernick may feel the Niners scapegoated him—he’s the only starter they’ve benched on their 32nd-ranked offense. It doesn’t seem fair.

If Kaepernick sincerely wants out, the Niners probably will try to trade him during the offseason. They may not find any takers—Kaepernick hasn’t been good since early last season—but he’s still fast, still has a strong arm and he’s only 28 years old.

In ascending order, here are five teams most likely to be interested in trading for the signal-caller this offseason.

5. Denver Broncos

1 of 5

This season may be Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning’s last. Head coach Gary Kubiak benched him on Sunday in Week 10 against the Kansas City Chiefs, and the future Hall of Famer turns 40 in March. He could choose to retire. Or the Broncos could choose to cut him.

Manning has thrown 17 picks this season; Colin Kaepernick has thrown only five. Manning’s passer rating is 67.5; Kaepernick’s is 78.5. As bad as Kaepernick has been, Manning has been even worse.

If Manning leaves this offseason, the Broncos probably would like to replace him with someone ready to play now. The Broncos have a great defense—they don’t have time to wait for a rookie quarterback to develop. They’re ready to compete.

Kaepernick is an experienced quarterback who seems like a good fit for Coach Kubiak’s under-center play-action-bootleg offense. Kaepernick can throw on the run, and his career quarterback rating when under center is 95.2.

4. Buffalo Bills

2 of 5

The Buffalo Bills don’t need a starting quarterback right now—Tyrod Taylor has been one of the best in the NFL this season. His passer rating currently is 106.2, and he has rushed for 243 yards.

But he has started only seven games in the NFL (he was a backup for the Baltimore Ravens for four seasons), small for a quarterback (6'1", 215 lbs) and has missed two games because of injury this season. How dependable is he?

The Bills could use a good backup quarterback, someone who could win games if Taylor misses more time or the league catches up to him. Kaepernick would be a good backup; plus he’s familiar with Bills offensive coordinator Greg Roman, who was the Niners' offensive coordinator from 2011 to 2014.

3. Cleveland Browns

3 of 5

Neither Josh McCown nor Johnny Manziel seems like the answer at quarterback for the Cleveland Browns.

McCown is 36 and can’t stay healthy—he may be near the end of his career. And yet, the Browns still like him better than 22-year-old Manziel, who has started only five games since Cleveland drafted him in the first round of the 2014 NFL draft.

Colin Kaepernick probably would be an upgrade over those two. Kaepernick has struggled recently, but he flourished in the past when he played behind a good offensive line and had time to throw.

The Browns have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. Left tackle Joe Thomas, left guard Joel Bitonio and Alex Mack are among the best players in the league at their positions.

2. New York Jets

4 of 5

New York Jets starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick turns 33 on November 24, and his quarterback rating is 85.5. He will be a free agent after this season. The Jets could take him or leave him.

Fitzpatrick’s backup, Geno Smith, has a career passer rating of 72.3 since getting drafted in 2013. He doesn’t seem like a future starter.

Trading for Colin Kaepernick may be the Jets’ best option this offseason. For what it’s worth, the Jets have a lot in common with a team Kaepernick took to the Super Bowl—the 2012 Niners.

Like that team, the Jets have a solid running game and defense full of first-round picks. Perhaps a dual-threat quarterback can take them over the top.

1. Philadelphia Eagles

5 of 5

The team announced quarterback Sam Bradford suffered a concussion and injured his left shoulder as Chris McCain drove him to the ground during the third quarter of the Philadelphia Eagles’ Week 10 game against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

Bradford has been injury-prone since college. His junior season at the University of Oklahoma, he injured his right shoulder and missed all but three games. He has missed 31 games since getting drafted in 2010.

Bradford will be a free agent after this season, and it’s hard to see why the Eagles would want him back. He’s hurt, his passer rating is 82.4 and he’s not a running threat.

Colin Kaepernick has never missed a start because of injury, and he is a big-time running threat. He would enhance Eagles head coach Chip Kelly’s ground attack, which features the read-option.
