Why the Saints can cover the spread

New Orleans saw its three-game winning streak end with a surprising home loss to Tennessee, but maybe that served as a wake-up call not to take any opponents lightly. The Saints had beaten three quality teams prior to that setback, including the NFC East-leading New York Giants in a 52-49 shootout. The Redskins do not have the type of offense that can keep up with New Orleans like the Giants.

While the Saints have not played as well on the road (1-3), they did beat the Indianapolis Colts 27-21 as 5.5-point underdogs behind a 20-0 halftime lead. New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees has also played much better since dealing with a shoulder injury early in the season. Brees has averaged nearly 365 yards over the last four games with 12 touchdowns and four interceptions.

Why the Redskins can cover the spread

Washington may not have the offense to compete with the Saints, but the team’s defense has the potential to play much better than it has of late. The Redskins have surrendered an average of 29 points in their last four games, with three of them resulting in losses. But in their first four games, they allowed just under 20 per game.

If New Orleans is limited to 20 points or less, Washington has a great shot of not only covering the spread, but also winning the game. With this matchup close to a pick’em, it becomes one and the same. The Redskins have shown the ability to slow down high-scoring offenses, beating the Philadelphia Eagles 23-20 back in Week 4 as three-point home underdogs. If they can similarly hold the Saints in check, they can win and cover.

Smart pick

New Orleans is definitely the better team and was playing well prior to last week. Washington did not show up last week at New England and has gone 4-11 ATS in its last 15 games following a loss. The Redskins have also lost eight straight games during the month of November with a 1-7 record ATS. Look for those trends to continue and take the Saints to get back to the .500 mark with a key road victory here.

Betting trends

The Saints are 19-5 ATS in their last 24 games in Week 10.

The Redskins are 1-7 SU and ATS in their last eight games in Week 10.

The Redskins are 4-11 ATS in their last 15 games after a loss.
