Report: Jones, Rockets Will Not Agree to Extension Before Deadline

Thursday, Oct. 29

According to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports, both Jones and Donatas Motiejunas have decided to bypass contract extensions with the Rockets prior to the Nov. 2 deadline due to a lack of progress in negotiations.

The 23-year-old Jones is set to become a restricted free agent following the 2015-16 season, which means he can sign an offer sheet with any team, but the Rockets will have an opportunity to match it.

The former University of Kentucky standout has settled into a starting role over the past three seasons with his best campaign coming in 2013-14, when he registered 12.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game while shooting better than 54 percent from the field.

While Jones was productive when he played last season, he took a step back as he played in just 33 games due primarily to a nerve issue in his leg.

Jones has been a good fit next to center Dwight Howard, but Houston may have been preparing for life after Jones when it selected power forward Montrezl Harrell with the No. 32 overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft.

Harrell made a strong first impression in his NBA debut Wednesday as he put up eight points and grabbed three rebounds in 16 minutes.

If Harrell proves to be the real deal as a rookie, then Jones, Motiejunas or even both could become expendable.

Jones is a big, gifted player at 6'9" who can score in the post, so he will certainly generate interest on the free-agent market. Based on how big of a deal he garners, though, that interest may not be reciprocated by the Rockets.
