Van Gundy Comments on Meeks' Injury
Thursday, Oct. 29
"We'll get further assessment and know better on a timetable in the next couple of days," Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy said following the game, according to Aaron McMann of MLive.com. "But they, they X-rayed him, he's got a Jones fracture."
Meeks' Injury the Latest Setback of Pistons Tenure
Jones fractures became a part of the NBA lexicon last season after Kevin Durant suffered one, so this certainly isn't good news for Meeks, who's been plagued by injuries since the start of the 2014-15 campaign.
Meeks' debut was delayed until Dec. 12 due to a back injury a year ago, but he shot just 34.9 percent from three—the worst mark since his rookie year—after returning.
"You feel bad for the guy," Van Gundy said, per McMann. "Last year, it's the first exhibition game. He plays one exhibition game and he goes out."
For a team actively attempting to space the floor, Meeks' absence will serve as a legitimate concern over the coming weeks. The 28-year-old has hit threes at a 37.3 percent clip over the course of his career, and his spot-up shooting has acted as a key component of the Pistons' four-out system under Van Gundy.
With Meeks missing time, reserve swingman Reggie Bullock could be asked to eat up some extra minutes on the perimeter. The injury could also open up more playing time for rookie Stanley Johnson if Van Gundy doesn't want to dig deep into his bench.
