Daniel Vidot, Colin Cassady and Latest WWE NXT Developmental News
Daniel Vidot's exit strategy from rugby is to move to the mat game as part of WWE NXT. His plan to join the WWE developmental system is the headline story in a week where the Performance Center welcomed nearly 20 new faces.
Colin Cassady, meanwhile, is nursing a bad wheel. The extent of the injury is in many an NXT fan's mind. Are we really going to go weeks without Big Cass delivering big boots?
In other NXT news, Baron Corbin suffered a slap heard 'round the Internet, an indy circuit dynamo signed with the company and a top tag team chose a non-WWE route.
Let's dig into all those stories, starting with the massive influx of prospects.
Performance Center Welcomes New Recruits
1 of 5Those prospects on the bottom rungs of NXT have reason aplenty to be worried. The company just brought in a load of new talent.
WWE sent out a press release (h/t PWInsider) announcing that it has signed 19 new recruits. Several of these signings had been reported earlier, but this made it official. A number of contestants from WWE Tough Enough are on that list:
- Mada Abdelhamid
- Daria Berenato
- Josh Bredl
- Patrick Clark
- Sara Lee
- Zamariah "ZZ" Loupe
- Amanda Saccomano
Bredl and Lee won the reality show competition. Clearly, Clark, Berenato and others showed officials enough to earn a deal despite not winning Tough Enough.
The other prospects come from a variety of places including indy wrestling, amateur wrestling and MMA:
- Christopher Atkins
- Cezar Bononi
- Gabriel Ealy
- Uriel Ealy
- Christopher Girard
- Dallas Harper
- Adrian Jaoude
- Daniel Matha
- Eddie Orengo
- Adrienne Reese
- Gzim Selmani
- Richard Swann
Reese is better known to wrestling fans as Athena. She earned her name working for Shimmer Women Athletes.
Rich Swann is a highly athletic high-flyer with a good amount of buzz among diehard fans. At just 5'8'', he's going to have an uphill journey at NXT, but his exciting style gives him a shot of making at impact, at least on the NXT level.
Rugby Player Says That WWE Wants to Sign Him
2 of 5Daniel Vidot, a former winger for the Brisbane Broncos of the National Rugby League, has his eyes set on a WWE career.
After a recent tryout, Vidot posted on his Facebook page that WWE is "keen to sign" him. He noted that he is looking for three-year deal but will finish his rugby contract before making the transition to the ring.
During his rugby career, he's gotten into a few brawls that suggest he will be plenty comfortable trading blows on the canvas.
WWE has not announced a deal with Vidot yet.
Colin Cassady Update
3 of 5Colin Cassady isn't 100 percent, but he's not as bad off as many thought.
A photo of him walking with crutches (courtesy of Maryann Mason) had fans worried that he had broken his leg. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Wrestle Zone) later reported that Cassady is expected to be out for a number of weeks.
However, according to ProFightDB.com, Cassady worked two tag matches over the weekend at the Aftershock Festival.
He may be hurting, but the leg is clearly not broken if he's still performing. Reports of the event like this one from PWInsider did mention that Cassady worked with a taped knee.
Slipknot Frontman Gets in Altercation with Baron Corbin
4 of 5Samoa Joe had some extra help in his bout against Baron Corbin. As Robert Pasani of Metal Injection detailed, Corey Taylor of Slipknot struck Corbin during an NXT show at the Aftershock Festival.
Taylor and Corbin had been exchanging verbal barbs on Twitter leading up to this.
This was clearly a scripted moment, as WWE itself posted a video on YouTube of the incident. This looks to just be a way to tie in the musical acts at the festival with the NXT shows and get some publicity as a bonus.
Other News, Notes
5 of 5The Young Bucks teased on Twitter that they could be headed to NXT but instead signed with Ring of Honor. The brothers announced the new deal in the above YouTube video.
That's a good fit for them and a big pickup for ROH.
Triple H teased a potential announcement about NXT TakeOver: London. He tweeted, "Big news for #NXTLoud and @WWENXT #TakeOver: London coming from meeting with Lemmy yesterday."
Triple H has long been friends with Motorhead. His tweet seems to suggest that the band may be performing some music for a future NXT show.
And don't expect Brian Kendrick to have another NXT match soon.
In an interview with Ring Rust Radio, he said, "Hopefully something will happen before the year is through and keep my fingers crossed. As of right now, I have no matches scheduled upcoming [sic] with NXT."
Kendrick was a fun surprise addition to NXT back in February. It would be a good idea to bring him back to work with some of the high-flyers on the roster, giving him a Rhyno-like part-time deal.
