Barnes, Warriors Will Table Contract Negotiations Until July
Tuesday, Oct. 27
Warriors general manager Bob Myers told Sam Amick of USA Today the contract talks were broken off until July at Barnes' behest.
"The (contract) talks were good," Barnes told reporters, per LetsGoWarriors on Twitter. "There wasn't any awkward tension."
Barnes, 23, averaged 10.1 points and 5.5 rebounds per game last season with the Warriors, establishing himself as a vital member of the team's championship-winning squad. He's an excellent perimeter shooter (40.5 percent from beyond the arc), a solid defender and one of the most important young pieces on Golden State's talented roster.
He isn't the only player seeking a contract extension, however. While the team re-signed forward Draymond Green to a five-year, $85 million deal this summer, the team hasn't even discussed an extension with center Festus Ezeli, per Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports.
Golden State is one of the deepest teams in the league, but holding on to every key piece is going to prove difficult. Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson are the stars, and Green is locked up for the long term, but players like Barnes and Ezeli likely will find more money on the free-agent market.
The decision for Barnes, then, may be between staying with a championship-caliber team and signing a bigger deal elsewhere.
In September, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reported Barnes turned down a four-year, $64 million extension. That decision, along with this latest news, seems to indicate Barnes is interested in being a restricted free agent in 2016 and testing the waters before making a decision.
That could ultimately prove costly for the Warriors, as Barnes could sign an offer sheet the Warriors wouldn't be inclined to match.
