Samuel Dalembert Released by Mavericks: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction

Adam WellsOct 24, 2015

Samuel Dalembert's second stint with the Dallas Mavericks has ended right before the 2015-16 regular season begins.

According to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports, the Mavericks will release Dalembert. ESPN's Tim MacMahon added that Salah Mejri won a roster spot ahead of the 34-year-old, making him expendable despite having a guaranteed salary.

According to RealGM.com, the veteran minimum for a player with at least 10 years of NBA service is slightly less than $1.5 million.

After being left at the altar by DeAndre Jordan over the summer, the Mavericks have been trying to secure an athletic big man. Dalembert was a low-risk investment, signing for the veteran's minimum in July.

Dalembert has been on the decline for a few years, bottoming out last season after he was traded to the New York Knicks. He averaged just four points per game and shot a career-worst 43.8 percent from the floor in 32 games before being waived in January.

Even though the Mavs will be forced to pay Dalembert's guaranteed salary, they have been able to assemble a solid group of centers. Zaza Pachulia was an effective role player with Milwaukee last year, and the duo of Mejri and JaVale McGee will provide solid insurance.

Considering Dalembert's last two stops have ended with him being released, it's safe to assume his career is coming to a close. He might be able to find a job after the season starts, as injuries happen, but a prominent role in the NBA seems to be out of the question.
