Buffalo Bills vs. Jacksonville Jaguars: What's the Game Plan for Jacksonville?

Evan ReierOct 23, 2015

The Jacksonville Jaguars host the Buffalo Bills in London's Wembley Stadium this Sunday and will hope that the heightened atmosphere and attention will be the spark to end the Jaguars' losing streak and promote the team to step up its play.

The Jaguars have suffered four straight losses, with the last three coming against especially vulnerable opponents—the Colts, Buccaneers and Texans. While the Bills are 3-3, they will be without starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor and star wide receiver Sammy Watkins, as reported by NFL.com's Marc Sessler, who have been driving forces on the offense.

The Jaguars offense will be going against a talented Bills defense, who can and will punish the Jaguars if the offense loses steam or composure. It will be a close contest, but the Jaguars will have to be close to their best if they want to win this game.

Winning in London would put the Jaguars at 2-5 and going into a bye week, a favorable combo. The Jaguars staff and players have not performed up to standards, but getting a much-needed win and break could create momentum for the second half of the season.

Jaguars' Offensive Game Plan

As mentioned, the Bills defense is a solid squad from top to bottom, but they've struggled with head coach Rex Ryan's influence. This has led to players such as defensive end Mario Williams to speak negatively about Ryan's coaching decisions, as reported by the Buffalo News:

"

When we’ve got four guys rushing, we can do some different things, end Mario Williams said. Some of the calls that we had, we just didn’t have four guys out there rushing in certain situations, things like that. You know, you’re just playing the call. We don’t make the calls as players. We’ve got to execute whatever’s called. If it’s three guys going, it’s three guys going and we’ve got to figure out an opportunity, a different way to get there faster.

"

Ryan's 3-4 scheme has obviously had some growing pains, but the Jaguars can't anticipate a stagnant defense from the Bills. With players like Williams, defensive tackle Marcell Dareus and corner Ronald Darby, there will be plenty of players who could make big plays on Sunday.

The Jaguars need a relatively mistake-free performance from the offensive line, something we haven't seen in a few weeks. Whether running back T.J. Yeldon will be back from his groin injury will definitely play a factor, but backup running back Denard Robinson is a solid option if the line can get a proper push.

Opening up the run will only create more opportunities for QB Blake Bortles to make plays with his arm or legs. He's been on the same page with wide receivers Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson, and maintaining that rhythm will be a driving force of the Jaguars offense.

The offense has to come out focused and unperturbed by recent events of the game. The complete stalls and quick turnovers have been the killing blow in recent losses, and the Jaguars offense has to be more consistent in this game for them to have a shot at winning.

Jaguars' Defensive Game Plan

The defense has severely underperformed at points this season, and to steady the ship, they need to dominate a weakened opponent. The Bills are without Taylor, Watkins, wide receiver Percy Harvin, running back Karlos Williams, guard John Miller and tackle Seantrel Henderson, who have all played a decent role in the 2015 season.

The Bills still have running back LeSean McCoy, but he will likely be the Jaguars' top priority and will stuff the box and contain him to the best of their ability. He may get yards, but limiting the long runs can leave the Jaguars in a advantageous position.

While stopping McCoy is hugely important, wreaking havoc on Bills QB E.J. Manuel will be a major goal as well. The Jaguars must get better pressure going forward this season, and Manuel could be an easy first target in their transition to a more aggressive strategy.

The all-important "Leo" position has not brought many dividends as seen in the table below, so the Jaguars should instead mix in more rushes with linebacker Dan Skuta and corner Aaron Colvin. Both have two sacks this season and have shown promise when going after the QB.

The Jaguars defense is getting a severely hindered Bills offense, and there should be no reason that it doesn't do, at worst, decently well. The past few weeks have offered "bounce-back" opportunities, but this is an offense that is missing five starters and a dynamic rookie running back. No excuses.

This is potentially the final chance for the Jaguars to turn around this season—an unlikely event, but still a possible one. Coming out fresh out of the bye week is the Jaguars best chance to play to their highest ability, and going into Week 9 as well as the rest of the season with confidence from a London win is even better.

This team has the talent to win games. The coaching staff hasn't done much to prove they deserve their jobs, but finally putting together a good performance would do a lot to erase that sentiment.
