Chris Boswell to Steelers: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction
Following an overtime loss against Baltimore in which Josh Scobee missed two field goals in the fourth quarter, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced they have released Scobee and signed Chris Boswell.
ESPN's Adam Caplan originally reported Boswell's agreement with the Steelers, noting the 24-year-old worked out for the team Saturday. Caplan also said the contract is a two-year deal.
Boswell has spent time with the Houston Texans and New York Giants, but he's never been active for a regular-season game.
During Boswell's most recent workout with the Texans at the end of September, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle raved about the work done by the former Rice star:
After the Steelers' 23-20 defeat, NFL Media's Palmer reported (h/t Chris Wesseling of NFL.com) the team was bringing in Boswell and Kai Forbath for workouts.
Pittsburgh's kicking situation has been a mess so far this season. Scobee was acquired by the Steelers in an August trade with Jacksonville, where he spent the first 11 years of his career. He's struggled through four games, going 3-of-7 on field-goal attempts between 40-49 yards and 6-of-10 overall.
Shaun Suisham suffered a torn ACL during the Hall of Fame Game against Minnesota. Garrett Hartley was going to be the replacement kicker, but a hamstring injury suffered in preseason landed him on injured reserve.
The Steelers have enough concerns on offense right now with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and center Maurkice Pouncey sidelined due to injuries. Kicking woes can be devastating, so seeing the franchise look to move in a different direction with Boswell seems like a risk worth taking.
