WWE's Best and Worst Booking Decisions for the Week of September 27

Erik BeastonOct 3, 2015

Where is Dean Ambrose?

It is a valid question that fans may have found themselves asking this week, especially since he was conspicuous by his absence during the main event angle of Raw and again on SmackDown, where Roman Reigns stepped inside the squared circle with the entire Wyatt Family, ready to pounce at any given moment.

So why was The Lunatic Fringe absent from the Thursday night broadcast, leaving the man he calls "brother" at the mercy of Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper and Braun Strowman?

He was busy wrestling a pre-show dark match against King Barrett.

That's right, arguably the most popular star on the roster was left off of SmackDown because someone decided his services were better used in an untelevised match.

At a time when the company is devoid of legitimate stars, the questionable use of Ambrose when he should be preparing for a high-profile match at Hell in a Cell stands out as the absolute worst booking decision of the week.

It was not the only one that had fans scratching their heads. The company should be delivering compelling stories and making carefully thought-out moves as it builds toward a live special from New York and Hell in a Cell on October 25. Yet it continued its run of uninspiring shows.

That is not to say everything the company did this week was bad. On the contrary; it continued the push of its hottest act, booked a huge pay-per-view match and produced a stellar look at what may be the most anticipated bout of the month.

What all did Creative get right and wrong? Let's take a look.

Right: A Special Look at Bayley vs. Sasha Banks

The writing team behind NXT very easily could have booked a tired interview segment or, even worse, the old standby that is the contract signing as the final bit of hype for TakeOver: Respect's main event between Sasha Banks and Bayley.

Instead, the writers sat back and allowed WWE's acclaimed production team to put together a video package that used the history between the two competitors to tell their story and sell the audience on the bout.

The video, set to Bring Me The Horizon's "Throne," was a fantastic look at the classic Banks and Bayley delivered in Brooklyn, as well as the training each has been putting themselves through to ensure they are at their very best for every minute of the half-hour they will compete for in the Iron Man match.

As NXT prepares to make history, the first brand to present a major live event or pay-per-view broadcast in which a pair of females will headline the show, it was a phenomenal final look at what has gone into making the match one of the most anticipated of 2015.

Wrong: Kane's The Demon...Or Is He?

While the performer may be doing some extraordinary work with the material given to him, the character of Kane has once again descended into ridiculousness, the product of a cartoonish storyline that has seen him repeatedly tricking WWE world champion Seth Rollins by starting the show as the Director of Operations, then transforming into The Demon.

It is an angle fans watched on Raw, when he shifted from one into the other following a heinous attack, then did so again on SmackDown, when he emerged from the locker room after being wiped out by the champion.

The character of the Big Red Monster has always given WWE Creative the go-ahead to write some truly stupid angles, but the ongoing one is threatening Rollins and his credibility as champion.

Well, whatever credibility he had left.

Sure, it is a placeholder program that will likely wrap up at Hell in a Cell, but that does not excuse the writing staff for intelligence-insulting stupidity.

Right: Roman Reigns and Bray Wyatt Go to Hell...In a Cell

The hottest rivalry in WWE today is not the cartoonish program between Kane and Seth Rollins or the nonexistent followup to the announcement of Brock Lesnar vs. Undertaker for the next pay-per-view main event.

Instead, it is the feud that exists between Roman Reigns and Bray Wyatt. Monday night's episode of Raw ended with a fantastic brawl that concluded with a jaw-dropping spear through the announce table.

Thursday, Creative took it one step further, officially booking the rivals in a Hell in a Cell match for the October 25 pay-per-view extravaganza.

The match will be a fitting end for the rivalry and one that provides the show with a high-impact, hate-filled bout between two young stars in their athletic prime. A wise choice that will strengthen what could very well be a strong show at a time when WWE most needs it.
