Aaron Ross, Everette Brown to Browns: Latest Contract Details and Reaction

Tyler ConwayAug 16, 2015

Looking to shore up their depth heading into Week 2 of the preseason, the Cleveland Browns announced the signing of veterans Aaron Ross and Everette Brown on Sunday.

Ross, 32, last played for the Baltimore Ravens in 2014. The former Texas standout spent the entire season on injured reserve after tearing his Achilles tendon last July. He has 11 career interceptions in eight NFL seasons, setting a career high with four while playing for the Giants in 2011. In addition to New York and Baltimore, Ross also spent the 2012 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Brown, 28, last played for Washington in 2014. He made six tackles in as many games, largely appearing on special teams. Drafted in the second round in 2009, Brown has mostly failed in developing into a solid edge-rusher. He has made only seven career sacks in six seasons, playing for the Carolina Panthers, San Diego Chargers, Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys, along with Washington.

The Browns waived offensive lineman Joe Madsen and defensive lineman Christian Tupou to keep their roster at the maximum of 90.

Ross and Brown likely face an uphill battle as they look to make the team. Neither will have much time to learn coach Mike Pettine's system, with only a few days remaining before the team's second preseason game against the Buffalo Bills. The Browns are also already deep at the cornerback and outside linebacker spots, so it's possible Brown and Ross are merely being brought in as stopgap practice options.

Teams must cut down their rosters to 75 players by Sept. 1, meaning time is of the essence if Ross and Brown want to continue their NFL careers.
