Polish Speedskater Stretchered Off After Being Cut By Blade During Olympic Race, Latest Updates
Polish speedskater Kamila Sellier was stretchered out of Milano Ice Skating Arena after another skater's blade slashed her face near her left eye during the women's 1,500 meter quarterfinal on Friday at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics.
Sellier was injured in a crash also involving Italy's Ariana Fontana and the United States' Kristen Santos-Griswold.
She received medical attention on the ice before she was carried out of the arena.
Polish officials said Sellier's left eye was okay following the incident, according to the AP's Dave Skretta.
A member of Poland's coaching staff said he believed Sellier had suffered a facial fracture, per the CBC's Devin Heroux.
Polish speed skating team press officer Konrad Niedźwiedzki told reporters Sellier had "suffered a cut on her cheek and eyelid that required stitches," per Yahoo Sports' Jay Busbee.
"We are waiting for what the hospital tests will show," Niedźwiedzki said via translation, per Busbee.
Sellier gave a thumbs-up to the crowd as she was carried away from the track, per Skretta.
The race then resumed after an injury timeout. Santos-Griswold was assessed a penalty after the collision and did not advance to the semifinals.
Fontana placed second in the quarterfinal and went on to advance to the final, where she finished fifth.
The Italian's suit was also "nicked up" following the crash, after which she received attention on her left hip, Skretta reported.
Sellier, 25, was skating in her second Olympics after also competing at the 2022 Beijing Games.
She was part of the Polish team that made it to the quarterfinals of the short track speed skating mixed team relay earlier in the Olympics.
Sellier previously starred for Poland during the 2025 ISU World Championships, where she helped her team finish on the podium of the women's 3,000 meter relay and the mixed team relay during the 2025 ISU World Championships last March.
