Dennis Schroder Reportedly Traded to Hornets, Cavs' Return Revealed Amid NBA Offseason

The nomadic career of veteran guard Dennis Schröder is adding another stop.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported Friday that the Cleveland Cavaliers are trading him to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for Tre Mann.

The 32-year-old has played on 11 different teams to this point, and the Atlanta Hawks are his only stop that lasted more than two seasons. He has swapped jerseys midseason in four of the last five years.

ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported in mid-June the Cavs could offload Schröder as a cost-cutting maneuver. Getting under the second apron of the luxury tax opens some new avenues for Cleveland to improve the roster, and reinforcements are clearly needed after getting swept by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals.

There's a reason Schröder has bounced around so much. He's good enough to come off the bench for a contender or soak up starting minutes for one in a rebuild, but he's not so good to enjoy much staying power.

Schröder's weaknesses become tougher to overlook in a postseason series as well, and that can leave a lasting image on a coaching staff and front office.

During 30 regular-season appearances with the Cavs, he averaged 8.2 points and 4.3 assists while shooting 40.1 percent from the field. In the playoffs, he was a less efficient scorer (38.1 percent) and scored 5.5 points per contest.

Schröder played just 10 minutes in Game 3 of the conference finals against the Knicks and was sidelined for Game 4 due to an illness. According to NBA.com, Cleveland had a minus-6.0 net rating with him on the court in the playoffs.

The 6'1" playmaker has two years left to run on his contract. He'll make $14.8 million in 2026-27 and then $15.5 million before he's eligible for free agency again. That's not a huge overpay but likely more than he'd command as a free agent this summer.

Schröder will bring some added depth and experience to Charlotte's backcourt, but if recent history is an indicator, he could wind up ending the season elsewhere.

The Cavs, meanwhile, will be looking for a new, cheaper backup point guard.
