Colts Coordinator Brian Mason Reportedly Suffered Serious Knee Injury in Sideline Collision

Indianapolis Colts special teams coordinator Brian Mason reportedly suffered multiple torn ligaments in his knee after taking contact on the sideline of Thursday's preseason matchup against the New England Patriots, according to The Athletic's James Boyd.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen said after Thursday's game Mason got "rolled up right on the sidelines on that last play."

As of Thursday night, Steichen said Mason's knee was still being evaluated.

Mason joined the Colts as special teams coordinator in 2023 and has been with the organization for the last three seasons.

The Colts ranked second in the NFL during Mason's third season with the unit in both kickoff return percentage (28.8 percent) and field goal percentage (94.4 percent).

Prior to joining the Colts, Mason worked as special teams coordinator with the Cincinnati Bengals and Notre Dame.

The incident took place on the final play of Thursday's game, which ended in a 13-13 tie.

Two players crashed over the sideline and got tangled up with Mason, who fell to the ground in visible pain.

Mason was treated by team doctors on the sideline and flew back to Indianapolis with the Colts Thursday night, per Boyd.

According to Boyd, the Colts "haven't gotten that far into the next steps yet" regarding whether Mason will need to miss time and who might be able to cover for him.

The Colts are scheduled to continue preseason action with two Saturday home games Aug. 22 against the Atlanta Falcons and Aug. 29 against the Detroit Lions.

Indianapolis has just under a month remaining before the team's Sept. 13 regular-season opener against the visiting Baltimore Ravens.

This isn't the first time in the recent past a member of an NFL coaching staff has suffered injuries on the sideline.

Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn suffered lacerations and a bloody nose last September after he was crashed into by quarterback Marcus Mariota in a Week 3 game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
