Kristaps Porzingis, Knicks Agree to Contract: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction
Even though Kristaps Porzingis has already gone through summer-league games with the New York Knicks, the 19-year-old, who was taken fourth overall in June's draft, is now officially a member of the franchise after signing his rookie contract.
According to NBA.com, Knicks president Phil Jackson announced Thursday the team agreed to deals with both Porzingis and Jerian Grant.
While terms of the deal were not listed in the release, RealGM.com lists the two-year salary for the fourth overall pick in the draft as approximately $7 million. Grant will make roughly $2.68 million over the next two years as the 19th pick.
In four summer-league games with the Knicks, Porzingis averaged 10.5 points and 3.2 rebounds per game while shooting 48 percent from the field. It's not a huge sample size, but it's certainly an encouraging sign for New York moving forward.
Porzingis told B/R's Jared Zwerling that his initial reception from Knicks fans at the draft was not going to deter him from showing what he can do.
"I knew there were going to be boos if the Knicks drafted me," Porzingis said. "That's how New York fans are. I know if I play hard and show that I want to be a Knick, I know the fans will accept me. I really wanted to get drafted by the Knicks, and it was a dream come true."
Now, with Porzingis officially under contract, he can get to work trying to prove those skeptics wrong and making New York love him.
The 19-year-old may not be a star right out of the gate, but he's shown enough poise in his interviews and early performance over the summer to suggest he can be the kind of special talent New York needs to be a consistent playoff threat in the Eastern Conference.
