NASCAR at Brickyard 2015 Qualifying Results: Race Order, Final Times, Reaction

Tim DanielsJul 25, 2015

Carl Edwards will start on the pole for Sunday's Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway after his qualifying triumph Saturday. He'll be joined on the front row by Joey Logano for the second consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.

Tony Stewart posted the best time during the opening round of qualifying but slipped to fourth during the second run. Edwards took advantage to earn the top spot. He'll hope it leads to better results this week, as he led just 19 laps after starting up front in New Hampshire.

Here's a look at the outcome for the final round of qualifying, with full results available at NASCAR.com:

Seeing Edwards on top is a bit surprising given his lack of prior success at Indianapolis. In 10 career appearances, his average starting position is barely inside the top 20 at 19.7, and he's scored just one top-five finish at the iconic track.

NASCAR Stats provided some further notes about the pole victory:

Those who did show up to the Brickyard with some past Indy accolades didn't fare nearly as well. Four-time winner Jimmie Johnson finished last among qualifiers for the second round, and five-time champ Jeff Gordon failed to make the cut after running 19th in Round 1.

Gordon, who currently sits 10th in the standings but is still seeking the first win of his final season, predicted chaos for Sunday's race, as noted by Jeff Gluck of USA Today.

"You fans and us drivers are going to be in for a heck of a ride tomorrow," Gordon said. "The restarts—I don't know how wide exactly Indianapolis Motor Speedway is on the back straightaway, but we're going to use up every inch of it."

Another notable driver who cracked the top 10 for Sunday is Kyle Busch. After missing the early portion of the season due to injury, he needed to finish inside the top 30 and win at least one race to qualify for the Chase at season's end.

His victory last week in New Hampshire was his third in the past four races, so that part of the requirement is easily satisfied. Now it comes down to points, as he sits in 33rd place with seven races left before the Chase. So he's in good shape but still must avoid any major setbacks.

ESPN Stats & Info showcased his narrow margin for error:

Looking ahead to race day, Gordon's prediction of a wild afternoon will likely be on point. Based on practice and qualifying, nobody has found the perfect setup yet, and the adjustments are going to continue deep into the 160-lap battle.

The race, which will be broadcast on the NBC Sports Network at 3:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, figures to see plenty of movement as teams find a comfort zone. It's also entering the part of the season where those drivers desperate for a win are going to take more risks.

Edwards at least gets to avoid some of the early bedlam by starting up front.
