Kevin Colbert, Steelers Agree to New Contract: Latest Details and Reaction

Tim DanielsJul 25, 2015

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced a two-year contract extension for general manager Kevin Colbert on Saturday. The new deal keeps him with the organization through the 2018 NFL draft.

Steelers President Art Rooney II praised Colbert's past work and expressed his excitement about keeping him in charge of building the roster moving forward, as noted by the team's official site.

"I am happy to announce that we have extended Kevin Colbert's contract for two additional years," Rooney said. "Kevin's work and footprint on our football operations have been a key factor in our success. We are excited Kevin will continue to lead our personnel department for at least the next three years."

Colbert also commented on re-signing with one of the NFL's most successful franchises during his 15 years in the front office.

"I am truly grateful to Art and Mr. Rooney for the opportunity to continue my career with the Pittsburgh Steelers," he said. "It is with great anticipation that we enter into the 2015 season in pursuit of another Super Bowl championship."

He joined the organization in 2000 and spent a decade serving as the director of football operations before being named general manager in 2010. The highlights of the Steelers' success during that span are Super Bowl titles in 2006 and 2009.

Dom Rinelli of Steelers PR showcased how their success ranks against the rest of the league since Colbert's arrival:

Head coach Mike Tomlin also signed an extension earlier in the week. Stability has been a hallmark of the organization for a long time, and the new deals are the latest example of that.

The biggest task for Colbert in the coming years will be continuing to bolster the roster without suffering a noticeable on-field drop-off. Most teams go through rebuilding periods, but the Steelers have been able to remain competitive while replacing veterans.

James Harrison, Heath Miller and Will Allen are a few of the impact players who may need to get replaced over the next three years. And Pittsburgh clearly remains confident Colbert is the right person to keep plugging voids that arise on the roster.
