James Jones Re-Signs with Cavaliers: Latest Contract Details, Analysis, Reaction
The Cleveland Cavaliers are bringing back another veteran who helped the franchise win the Eastern Conference last year. According to Chris Haynes of the Northeast Ohio Media Group, the Cavs agreed to a one-year deal with James Jones worth $1.45 million. The team announced the deal on Saturday.
Windhorst added one of the wrinkles in Jones' new contract:
"Due to their (complex) Bird Rights situations both LeBron James & James Jones have no-trade clauses with their new deals.
— Brian Windhorst (@WindhorstESPN) July 23, 2015"
Until the playoffs, Jones was almost exclusively a three-point specialist. According to NBA.com, the 34-year-old led the league in three-point attempt rate (87.1 percent) among players who appeared in at least 20 games.
As Cleveland became decimated by injuries in the postseason, Jones was forced to assume a larger role. His minutes jumped from 11.7 per game in the regular season to 15.6 a night. As a result, his performance suffered. His points per 36 minutes dipped from 13.5 to 10.1, per Basketball-Reference.com.
As long as they continue to use Jones sparingly next year, this deal makes sense for the Cavaliers. Jones is a proven shooter, and he may have one of those nights where he hits three or four three-pointers to seal a critical victory.
Maintaining the continuity from last year will also help Cleveland pick right up from where it left off in reaching the NBA Finals.
