Bradford, Eagles Discussing Extension

ESPN's Ed Werder tweeted, citing a source, "Eagles discussing with QB Sam Bradford possible short extension committing him to team beyond 2015, final year of his contract."
Werder's report contradicts a previous tweet from July 20 by NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, who noted Bradford would let the chips fall where they may after his maiden season in Eagles coach Chip Kelly's offense.
Kelly wouldn't comment on Werder's report but made mention of Rapport's when asked. "Kelly won't address report Eagles working on Sam Bradford contract extension. 'Last week there was a report we weren't,' Kelly said," according to Bob Grotz of DelcoTimes.com.
Rapoport explained at the time that Bradford could increase his value on the open market by not pushing for a long-term commitment from Philadelphia now. Having such a mindset is indicative of the type of belief Bradford must have in his own skills.
Prior contract negotiations, which NFL Network's Albert Breer reported in June, didn't gain any substantial traction. Bleacher Report's Cian Fahey believes Bradford's reported initial decision to play out the deal is logical for all involved:
"Makes most sense for both sides. Bradford gets chance for HUGE leverage over PHI/FA market, PHI gets protection. https://t.co/LodGpY01JA
— Cian Fahey (@Cianaf) July 20, 2015"
While Bradford is also putting the team first to a degree by not making waves about a fresh contract, he would be taking a massive risk in not extending his pact. The 27-year-old QB has torn his left ACL twice and missed all of last year.
But even when he has played, Bradford hasn't lived up to the hype as the No. 1 overall draft pick from 2010. With a 6.29 yards-per-attempt average and a 79.3 career passer rating, the Oklahoma Heisman Trophy winner still has plenty to prove in the pros.
A huge rookie contract has to give Bradford some comfort in his financial future. Whether he parlays a prospective 2015 resurgence into another massive payday is one of the NFL's most compelling developments to monitor for the coming season.
