Arsenal Transfer News: Thierry Henry Calls for 4 New Signings, Latest Rumours

Nick AkermanJul 17, 2015

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry believes the Gunners "need four" signings to challenge Premier League champions Chelsea for the 2015-16 title.

The Sky Sports pundit suggests Arsene Wenger must ensure his squad is packed with players who are fighting for time in the first team. Strength in depth will be key to pushing Chelsea and maintaining momentum, according to Henry, reported by Sky Sports:

"

That team, I think, has great mentality, top-quality players and match-winners. I still think they need four players to get closer to Chelsea. I compare it to my generation; I knew, for example, when I first arrived at Arsenal that if I was not performing after an hour, Dennis Bergkamp was on the bench sometimes or Kanu or Sylvain Wiltord or Davor Suker. Whoever it was, I knew I had an hour to perform.

Henry zoned in on fellow Frenchman Olivier Giroud, a player he previously suggested will never lead Arsenal to the title. With a sprinkling of extra talent, Henry indicates Wenger can find the formula to make sure Arsenal are always performing in front of goal, per the aforementioned Sky Sports report:

"

Olivier Giroud alone there as a natural-born striker, it is difficult, because they say when he does not score, it is very difficult. Hopefully Theo Walcott could be the answer. You have a guy who you did not think was going to play as a striker, although he has been the talk of the town for a little while, him playing as a striker.

You know some people still question Arsene Wenger, but I still think that Arsene has the right attitude and fire; the fire in his belly to try to make sure that team can win another title.

"

The north London side finished third last season, 12 points behind Chelsea at the top. Most noticeably, Arsenal produced some impressively dogged away performances against the elite sides—beating Manchester City, drawing with Liverpool and Manchester United—a positive sign after they regularly came unstuck against their main rivals during the 2013-14 campaign.

Wenger has built a fine team, one that plays entertaining and often ruthless counter-attacking football, but there's still room for major improvement. The Gunners have proved susceptible to putting together an excellent string of results in previous years, only for their title challenge to falter when a key player is injured or poor form strikes.

Last season's 10-game unbeaten run between February 10 and May 11 underlined exactly what the team are capable of. Yet Arsenal saw the season out with just one win in their last four matches, per Soccerway. Granted, the title was far gone weeks before, but the side's inconsistent bouts of form make them constantly difficult to judge.

This is where Chelsea excelled last season and where Jose Mourinho shows his class in general. The Blues lost just three games all year, none at home, and weren't afraid to play "boring" football to get the job done. It wasn't always pretty, but it was effective. Wenger may need to bear this in mind sometimes.

However, he needs to make a handful of key signings to genuinely improve Arsenal. Disappointingly for supporters, the boss recently denied speculation he will move for Real Madrid's Karim Benzema, per Matt Hughes of the Times:

There's certainly room for a new striker after Yaya Sanogo agreed to join Ajax on loan, confirmed by the Dutch club:

B/R UK's Andy Brassell recently discussed the players currently linked to Arsenal this summer:

Henry's comments underline how Arsenal also feel like they're making progress yet getting no closer to the title. Wenger must focus on signing individuals who can bring unique, world-class talents to the club. Like the capture of Petr Cech, adding proven winners must be the manager's main priority.

If it isn't, Arsenal will be in the same position next summer, adding to the feeling of deja vu for supporters who are itching for the team to make a lasting impression in the English division.
